ISLAMABAD, October 19, 2026: YouTube is testing a new artificial intelligence-powered search feature that displays AI-generated summaries directly in desktop search results, allowing users to find answers and relevant video clips without opening individual videos.

The experimental feature builds on YouTube’s conversational AI tool, Ask YouTube, and is currently available to a limited number of signed-in desktop users in the United States who search in English.

According to the company’s announcement, the feature is designed to help users find useful information more quickly by combining written explanations with relevant video segments and timestamps.

The development is part of Google’s broader efforts to integrate generative artificial intelligence into YouTube, following the earlier introduction of Ask YouTube for mobile users.

How YouTube’s new AI search feature works

Under the experiment, YouTube may display an AI-generated overview near the top of its search results page instead of relying solely on the traditional vertical list of videos.

The summaries are intended to appear for certain types of searches, particularly questions involving explanations, practical instructions or learning new skills.

For example, a user searching for ways to remove stains from painted walls may receive an AI-generated explanation alongside relevant video clips demonstrating the process.

The feature can also identify specific sections of videos that address a user’s question, helping viewers navigate directly to the information they need.

Each summary may include timestamps showing where the relevant content appears within a video.

Ask YouTube lets users explore answers and ask follow-up questions

The experimental search previews are connected to Ask YouTube, the platform’s conversational AI feature.

Users who want more information can select the “Show more” option to expand the AI-generated response.

They can also ask follow-up questions, allowing them to explore a topic without starting a separate search.

The system combines written guidance with relevant video content, offering an alternative way to discover information on the platform.

However, users who prefer conventional search results can continue scrolling down the page to browse videos in the usual format.

YouTube AI search currently limited to US desktop users

YouTube has confirmed that the experiment is being conducted on a limited scale.

At present, access is restricted to selected users in the United States who are signed in to their YouTube accounts and conduct searches in English on desktop devices.

The company has not announced when the feature will become available to a wider audience or whether it will be introduced in additional countries and languages.

The experiment follows YouTube’s earlier efforts to introduce conversational AI tools for mobile users.

By adding AI-generated previews to search results, YouTube is exploring how artificial intelligence can help viewers locate relevant information within its extensive video library.

The feature remains in testing, and its wider rollout has not yet been confirmed.
