Keeping a mobile phone near the pillow or on the bed while sleeping may affect sleep quality and mental well-being, particularly when notifications and screen use continue late into the night.
According to experts, frequent mobile phone use at night, exposure to screen light and incoming notifications can interfere with restful sleep. The habit of checking calls, messages and alerts may also disturb mental peace and interrupt sleep.
The report notes that some people feel tired in the morning despite sleeping for eight hours, potentially because their sleep quality has been affected.
Blue light emitted by mobile screens at night may also interfere with the body’s natural sleep cycle and the production of melatonin, a hormone associated with sleep. This can delay the onset of sleep and reduce its overall quality.
Research studies have also indicated a link between mobile phone use before bedtime and sleep disturbances.
Experts recommend the following measures to improve sleep quality:
- Keep your mobile phone at some distance from the bed instead of placing it near your pillow.
- Stop using your phone at least 30 minutes before bedtime.
- Turn off unnecessary notifications during the night.
- Keep bedroom lighting and noise levels low.
- If you use your phone as an alarm, place it at a suitable distance from the bed.
