Xi calls for nationwide participation in tree planting to strengthen ecological protection

Beijing: Chinese President Xi Jinping has called for mobilising society-wide participation in tree-planting efforts, emphasising that environmental protection requires collective responsibility and sustained action.

Xi made the remarks while taking part in a voluntary afforestation activity in Beijing’s Changping District, where he joined other senior Chinese leaders in planting trees and interacting with citizens.

The initiative reflects China’s broader focus on ecological development and long-term environmental sustainability, as authorities continue efforts to expand forest coverage and reduce desertification.

Emphasis on shared responsibility

During the activity, Xi said that building a sound ecological environment is a shared goal that depends on the participation of all sectors of society.

He highlighted the importance of engaging younger generations, encouraging children to value education, physical activity and environmental responsibility from an early age.

Progress in environmental efforts

Officials noted that China has recorded steady growth in forest area and stock volume in recent years, alongside a reduction in desertified and sandy land.

Authorities say these improvements position China among countries with the fastest progress in greening and environmental restoration.

Policy and long-term goals

Xi also referred to the recently adopted Ecological and Environmental Code, describing it as a step toward strengthening the legal framework for environmental protection.

He stressed that afforestation remains a key component of China’s broader goal of building a sustainable and environmentally balanced future.
