Scientists have discovered the largest coral ever found, which is hundreds of years old, in the southwest Pacific Ocean.
According to foreign media reports, this coral, over 300 years old, is being described as the largest ever discovered, even bigger than the largest fish, the blue whale.
Media reports revealed that this coral was discovered by a National Geographic videographer, who was accompanied by a team of scientists. The team had traveled to the remote parts of the Pacific Ocean to observe the effects of climate change.
The scientists used a special tape measure to assess the coral underwater and found it to be 34 meters wide, 32 meters long, and 5.5 meters tall.
The coral discovered in the Pacific Ocean has been declared healthy by scientists.
Videographer Manu San Felix, who discovered the coral in the Solomon Islands, stated that he was amazed by the find.
What is Coral?
Corals are formed from thousands of living organisms called polyps, each with its own body and mouth, growing together as a colony. Some corals grow hard, and when many corals come together, they form a coral reef.
Due to climate change, the ocean’s temperature is rising, which poses a threat to corals worldwide. Additionally, corals provide shelter to countless marine animals and help clean pollution from the ocean.
