ISLAMABAD: The World Bank has acknowledged Pakistan’s progress in restoring macroeconomic stability and highlighted the country’s potential to triple per capita incomes by 2050 if sustained economic reforms help accelerate long-term growth.

According to details shared by economic affairs commentator Khurram Schehzad, Pakistan’s GDP growth has increased from 3.2 percent to 3.7 percent, while improvements in fiscal management, foreign exchange reserves and investor confidence have contributed to a more stable economic outlook.

The assessment highlighted a primary fiscal surplus of 2.9 percent of GDP, alongside stronger remittance inflows that have supported the rebuilding of foreign exchange reserves.

It also pointed to sovereign credit rating upgrades by S&P and Moody’s as indications of improving market confidence in Pakistan’s economic prospects.

The World Bank’s country director was quoted as saying, “Pakistan has made real progress in restoring stability, and markets have taken notice.”

Economic reforms and long-term growth potential

The shared account identified reforms in the energy sector, trade liberalisation and privatisation as important elements of Pakistan’s economic programme.

It also referred to a US$3 billion Eurobond as part of the country’s return to international debt markets.

Looking beyond the immediate recovery, the assessment highlighted Pakistan’s potential to achieve annual economic growth of 6.2 to 6.9 percent, which could support a threefold increase in per capita incomes by 2050.

However, this longer-term projection represents a potential outcome rather than a guaranteed forecast. Achieving it would require sustained reforms, stronger productivity, investment and consistent economic policies.
