WhatsApp introduces new feature to identify unknown callers

ISLAMABAD, November 3, 2026: WhatsApp has introduced a feature designed to help users identify unfamiliar callers by displaying additional information about unknown numbers, offering greater transparency when receiving calls from people outside their contact lists.

Under the feature, users receiving a WhatsApp call from an unsaved number will be able to see the country associated with the caller’s phone number directly on the incoming call screen.

The app will also indicate whether the caller shares a WhatsApp group with the recipient, providing another clue about a possible connection between the two users.

The additional information is intended to help users make more informed decisions before answering unfamiliar calls, particularly amid growing concerns about online scams and fraudulent communications.

Users can choose whether to answer the call, block the number or report suspicious activity.

The feature could be particularly useful when scammers attempt to contact people through unfamiliar international numbers or impersonate trusted individuals.

However, a displayed country name reflects the number’s country code and does not necessarily establish the caller’s physical location or identity.

Similarly, membership in a shared WhatsApp group does not guarantee that a caller is trustworthy.

The update aims to give users more context when handling unexpected calls while encouraging greater caution against potential fraud.
