ISLAMABAD: WhatsApp is developing a new in-app browser feature for iPhone users that could change how web links open in chats, allowing users to visit websites without leaving the messaging app or switching to Safari.

The feature, spotted in WhatsApp beta version 26.41.10.72 for iOS through Apple’s TestFlight programme, is designed to open links directly within WhatsApp, making it easier to browse shared content while continuing conversations.

According to WhatsApp feature tracker WABetaInfo, the latest development expands on earlier browser functionality that was limited to certain business websites.

The new system is being developed to support a wider range of links shared through chats, potentially removing the need to switch between WhatsApp and an external browser.

How WhatsApp’s new in-app browser will work

The upcoming feature is expected to introduce a dedicated In-App Browser option in WhatsApp’s settings, giving iPhone users control over how links open.

Once enabled, tapping a link in a WhatsApp conversation will open the webpage inside the messaging app instead of launching Safari or another default browser.

When users activate the option for the first time, a notification will appear at the bottom of the screen explaining the change in browsing behaviour.

The setting will remain optional, allowing users to switch back to their preferred external browser whenever they want.

This means iPhone users will be able to choose between opening websites within WhatsApp and continuing to use Safari or another browser installed on their devices.

WhatsApp expands earlier browser testing

WhatsApp first began experimenting with an internal web browser for Android users in 2019.

The company later tested similar functionality for iPhone users through beta version 25.14.10.72, introduced in 2025.

However, that earlier version supported only selected business website links that met specific technical requirements, including HTTPS compatibility.

As a result, many ordinary links shared in WhatsApp conversations could not be opened through the internal browser.

The latest beta development aims to remove those restrictions and make in-app browsing available for a broader range of websites.

The feature remains under development, and WhatsApp has not announced when it will become available to all iPhone users.

Its wider release will depend on further testing and the company’s rollout plans.
