LAHORE: Mini LED has become one of the most widely used terms in television marketing, appearing across products ranging from premium flagship televisions to comparatively affordable models.
However, the Mini LED label alone does not necessarily indicate how a television will perform. Differences in backlight design, dimming technology and the number of independently controlled lighting zones can result in significantly different viewing experiences.
At its core, Mini LED technology uses LED chips that are considerably smaller than those found in conventional LCD television backlights. Their smaller size allows manufacturers to place a much larger number of LEDs behind the display.
This increased density can allow the television’s backlight to be divided into multiple independently controlled areas, known as dimming zones. Individual zones can brighten or darken according to the image being displayed rather than requiring the entire backlight to operate at the same brightness level.
When implemented effectively, the technology can improve black levels, highlight brightness and detail in scenes containing both bright and dark areas.
However, the number of LEDs alone does not determine picture quality. Three factors play an important role in determining Mini LED performance.
Hardware dimming
One key consideration is whether the television uses hardware-based local dimming.
With hardware local dimming, physical groups of LEDs behind the screen can be independently controlled. This enables the backlight to react more precisely to different areas of an image.
For example, a bright object against a dark background can be illuminated while surrounding areas remain comparatively dark.
Software-based or virtual dimming relies more heavily on image processing instead of independent physical control of numerous backlight zones. Under comparable conditions, hardware-based local dimming can provide more precise control over bright and dark areas of the picture.
Number of dimming zones
The number of independently controlled dimming zones is another important consideration.
Televisions with more zones can generally divide the screen into smaller lighting areas, providing finer control over where brightness is increased or reduced.
A television with several thousand independently controlled zones may therefore provide more precise backlight management than a design with only a few hundred zones, although overall performance also depends on processing, panel quality and the effectiveness of the dimming algorithm.
Backlight architecture
The physical arrangement of the LEDs behind the display also affects performance.
Edge-lit televisions position LEDs around the edges of the screen, while direct-lit models place LEDs behind the display.
Full Array Local Dimming, commonly known as FALD, distributes LEDs across the rear of the panel and divides them into independently controlled zones. This architecture is commonly used in higher-performance Mini LED televisions because it enables more localized brightness control.
TCL says its Mini LED television range uses full-array backlighting across different product categories.
“Mini LED gets talked about as if it’s a single technology, but it’s really a family of approaches with very different results,” said Majid Khan Niazi, Director of Marketing, TCL Middle East, Africa & Beyond.
He said consumers should consider hardware versus software dimming, the number of dimming zones and the television’s backlight architecture when comparing products.
According to Omdia global Mini LED TV shipment data cited by TCL for the first half of 2026, the company shipped 2.43 million Mini LED televisions worldwide, representing a 77.1 per cent year-on-year increase.
As Mini LED technology becomes more widely available, consumers may increasingly need to look beyond the product label when comparing televisions.
The number of local dimming zones, the way those zones are controlled and the design of the backlight can provide a clearer indication of how a Mini LED television may perform in real-world viewing conditions.
