A westerly wave will continue to affect northern Pakistan until Wednesday, bringing rain, thunderstorms, and snowfall, with the risk of landslides and avalanches in hilly regions, according to the National Weather Forecasting Centre (NWFC).
In its daily outlook, the NWFC said the system remains active over the upper parts of the country and is expected to persist in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Azad Kashmir. The weather pattern matters for residents and travellers as it may disrupt road travel, trigger avalanches in mountainous terrain, and lower temperatures further across the region.
The coldest temperatures were recorded at minus 7°C in Leh, Malam Jabba, Parachinar, and Gupis. Bagrote and Kalam saw temperatures fall to minus 6°C, while Astore and Rawalakot recorded minus 5°C.
Forecasters said intermittent rain and thunderstorms are likely in upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Kashmir, and Gilgit-Baltistan, with moderate to heavy snowfall expected at isolated locations. Cloudy conditions with occasional rain and gusty winds may also affect lower Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, northeastern Punjab, and northern Balochistan, while cold and dry weather is expected elsewhere.
The advisory urged tourists and commuters to exercise caution and avoid unnecessary travel during the forecast period. Snowfall is expected on January 27 in areas including Naran, Kaghan, Dir, Swat, Kalam, Chitral, Kohistan, Mansehra, Abbottabad, Shangla, Astore, Hunza, Skardu, Murree, the Galliyat, Neelum Valley, Bagh, Poonch, and Haveli.
The NWFC warned that rain and snowfall could lead to landslides and avalanches in upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Kashmir. Separately, the National Highways and Motorways Police advised motorists travelling on the Murree Expressway (N-75) to remain cautious during snowfall, sharing updates showing snow-clearing operations underway.
