Former Pakistan Test captain Wasim Akram has said he believes Babar Azam should not have accepted the captaincy of the national Test side, describing the decision as unnecessary.
Speaking at a charity fundraising event in Manchester alongside Waqar Younis, Akram said he did not intend to blame anyone and acknowledged that his assessment could be wrong. However, he said Babar should have continued playing only as a batsman rather than taking on the leadership role.
Wasim Akram Questions Leadership Situation
Akram referred to an incident during the toss for the third Test, when Babar was asked about changes involving seven players and the coaching staff. According to Akram, Babar responded that he did not know about the changes.
Akram questioned the situation, saying that a player cannot be expected to give his full effort if the team leader or captain does not support him.
Akram Says Babar Could Have Continued as Player
Akram said that, in his view, Babar should have decided after the second Test to continue in the series solely as a player.
The comments were made during Akram’s appearance at the fundraising event in Manchester and reflected his personal assessment of Babar’s decision to take the Test captaincy.
