In a message on World Water Day 2024, WAPDA Chairman said that “WAPDA plays a key role for national development by harnessing water resources”
“8 under construction WAPDA projects to add 9.7 MAF water to irrigate 3.9 MA land”. In his message on the eve of World Water Day, WAPDA Chairman Engr Lt Gen Sajjad Ghani (Retd) said that water is life. It is a sine-qua-non not only for the existence of life, but also for the development of man on Earth. We are lucky because Pakistan has been blessed with abundant water resources. It is up to us how effectively we use these resources for the welfare of our people and country.
The Chairman said that WAPDA has been playing a key role for national development by harnessing water resources since its inception in 1958. WAPDA is committed to ensure water, food and energy security of Pakistan. We are happy to share that WAPDA is implementing the largest development portfolio comprising eight mega projects. These projects are destined to revolutionize the economic environment of Pakistan with much needed water and most economically available hydel electricity.
The chairman further said that the projects under construction by WAPDA include Diamer Basha Dam, Mohmand Dam, Dasu Hydroelectric Project, 5th Tarbely Expansion, Kurram Tangi Dam 1st Stage, Nai Gaj Dam, Kachhi Canal Expansion and Greater Karachi Bulk Water Supply Scheme (K -IV ). These projects, to be completed in phases from 2024 to 2029, will add 9.7 million acre feet (MAF) to the country’s gross water supply, enough to irrigate an additional 3.9 million acres of land and provide
950 million gallons per day for drinking to Karachi and Peshawar. In addition, these projects will also double WAPDA’s hydel generation in the next four to five years from 9,500 MW to 19,500 MW with the addition of about 10,000 MW of clean, green and low-cost hydel electricity.
