A growing body of scientific evidence suggests that vaping vs smoking may not be the clear health trade-off many people assume. New research indicates that electronic cigarettes, often marketed or perceived as a safer alternative to traditional smoking, can also damage cells and may increase the risk of serious diseases.
Researchers say while vaping and cigarette smoking differ in how they deliver nicotine, both may have significant effects on the body, particularly on DNA, the lungs, and the cardiovascular system.
Studies Link Vaping to DNA Damage
According to recent research by the University of New South Wales and scientists at the University of Southern California, vaping may damage DNA in cells found in the mouth and lungs.
DNA carries the body’s genetic instructions and plays a critical role in cell growth and repair. Damage to DNA can increase the risk of diseases, including certain types of cancer.
Flavoured E-Cigarettes Also Raise Concerns
Researchers found that some sweet and fruit-flavoured vaping products may also contribute to DNA damage.
The studies further reported that users of pod-based vaping systems showed comparatively higher levels of cellular damage than some other users, although researchers said more studies are needed to better understand the long-term effects.
Smoking and Vaping Both Carry Health Risks
The findings suggest that the level of DNA damage observed in some people who vape was similar to that seen in cigarette smokers.
Health experts caution that vaping should not automatically be considered a risk-free alternative to smoking. They recommend avoiding both smoking and vaping where possible, noting that further research is continuing to evaluate their long-term health effects.
