US and Israel launch strikes on Iran as Trump announces ‘major combat operations’

WASHINGTON/TEHRAN — The United States and Israel have launched coordinated military strikes on Iran, with US President Donald Trump confirming that “major combat operations” are under way. Explosions were reported in Tehran and several other Iranian cities early Friday, marking a sharp escalation in tensions over Iran’s nuclear programme.

In a video statement released on Truth Social, Trump said the operation targeted Iranian nuclear facilities at Fordow, Natanz and Isfahan. He said the action was aimed at preventing Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon. Iranian authorities have not immediately provided a full account of the damage.

Images circulating online showed smoke rising over parts of Tehran. Explosions were also reported in Isfahan, Qom, Karaj and Kermanshah, according to local media accounts. International news organisations have limited access inside Iran, making independent verification difficult.

Trump outlines objectives

In his address, Trump accused Iran’s leadership of continuing its nuclear and missile development despite diplomatic pressure. He said the United States intended to dismantle Iran’s missile capabilities and target elements of its naval forces.

The president also urged Iranian citizens to challenge their government, stating that “the hour of your freedom is at hand.” He warned that American forces could face casualties during the operation.

Washington has in recent months intensified pressure on Tehran to agree to a new nuclear deal. Trump said earlier this week he was dissatisfied with Iran’s negotiating position during ongoing talks.

Israel confirms involvement

Israel’s Defence Minister Israel Katz described the strikes as “pre-emptive.” The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said Iran launched retaliatory missile fire toward Israel following the attacks.

In a statement, the IDF said sirens were activated across parts of the country after missiles were detected. The Israeli Air Force said it was working to intercept incoming threats.

The latest exchange comes less than a year after a 12-day conflict between Israel and Iran, which, according to Israeli officials, significantly weakened Iran’s air defence systems.

Regional impact

The developments raise concerns about a wider regional conflict involving US forces and Israel’s security. Iran’s nuclear programme has been a longstanding point of dispute between Tehran and Western governments.

Further details about casualties or the scale of damage have not been confirmed by independent observers.
