The University of Swat observed World Environment Day on June 5 with a series of activities aimed at raising awareness about the global crisis of plastic pollution. Organized by the Department of Environmental and Conservation Sciences (DE&CS) in collaboration with the Green Youth Movement (GYM), the event was held under the United Nations’ 2025 theme: “Ending Plastic Pollution.” Faculty, staff, and a large number of students took part in the day’s proceedings, which began with an awareness walk followed by a campus-wide cleanliness drive.
Participants called for a gradual phase-out of single-use plastics, urging a transition to sustainable alternatives. They also stressed the importance of promoting responsible consumption habits and effective waste management. Speakers at the event underlined the environmental, health, and economic costs of plastic waste, calling for urgent collective action at all levels. Students were encouraged to become active contributors to environmental protection efforts both within and beyond the university.
The organizers reaffirmed their commitment to expanding environmental education and outreach, noting that such initiatives are essential in fostering climate resilience. The leadership of Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Hassan Sher was praised for his ongoing support for sustainable development and environmental stewardship at the university.
