The University of Swat has inaugurated the 17th HEC Inter-University Chess Championship 2026, bringing together students from 22 universities across Pakistan for one of the country’s leading university-level chess competitions. The four-day event aims to promote strategic thinking, sportsmanship and collaboration among young players.
Organised by the Higher Education Commission (HEC) in collaboration with the University of Swat, the championship provides a national platform for student athletes to compete while encouraging academic and cultural exchange between higher education institutions.
Vice Chancellor Opens National Championship
Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Muhammad Qasim officially inaugurated the championship and welcomed participating teams, officials and guests. He said hosting the event reflects the University of Swat’s commitment to promoting excellence in both academics and extracurricular activities.
Addressing the opening ceremony, Prof. Dr. Qasim described chess as more than a competitive game, saying it helps develop concentration, discipline, patience and sound decision-making skills.
Focus on Student Development
The vice chancellor said the championship offers participants an opportunity to compete at the national level while learning from one another and building lasting academic and social connections.
He added that sports play an important role in the overall development of students by strengthening leadership qualities, teamwork and self-confidence. According to Prof. Dr. Qasim, the University of Swat remains committed to creating opportunities that support students’ intellectual and personal growth.
Four-Day Competition Underway
Officials said the championship will continue for four days, with teams competing for top honours in multiple categories.
They added that the event also serves to strengthen inter-university cooperation and encourage positive engagement among students from different regions of Pakistan.
