SWAT: The University of Agriculture Swat observed the International Mountains Day. Speakers delivered lectures and presented detailed presentations on the subject. Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Dawood Jan said that mountains cover almost a quarter of the Earth’s surface, providing support to plants and animals and a source of livelihood for millions of people. Mountains are also an excellent source of various types of food.
He further said that mountains play a crucial role in regulating the climate, providing freshwater reservoirs, and maintaining biodiversity. Mountains also play a significant role in preserving traditional knowledge and cultural heritage.
Professor Dr. Muhammad Jamal Khan, Chairman Department of Soil Sciences delivered presentation on the theme of International Mountains Day and shed light on the importance and benefits of mountains. He discussed the benefits of mountains, the dangers they face, and different priorities for their preservation in the future.
He further said that we must work together, especially the youth, to promote sustainable development in mountains, ensure conservation, and empower local communities.
Professor Dr. Hidayat ur Rehman said, “Let us pledge to protect these great mountains for future generations and ensure their long-term sustainability.”
At the end of the Vice-Chancellor, along with faculty members, staff and students, organized an awareness walk within the university.
