SWAT: The Department of Soil and Environmental Sciences, The University of Agriculture, Swat on 5th December organized a seminar on the theme “Caring for Soil: Measure, monitor, manage to highlight the importance of accurate soil data and information in understanding soil characteristics and supporting informed decision-making on sustainable soil management.
Prof. Dr. Mohammad Jamal Khan (Chairman department of Soil and Environmental Sciences) and Dr. Roshan Ali (Director Agriculture Research Institute Swat) talked on the occasion about the history of the world soil day and the damages caused to soil and water resources due to climate change and human activities with great insight along with facts and figures.
The Honorable Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Dawood Jan emphasized the critical role played in sustaining life on Earth. Today, December 5th, marks World Soil Day, a day to recognize the critical role of soil played in sustaining life on Earth. Soil is the foundation of the ecosystem, providing food, fiber, and fuel. It supports biodiversity, regulates the climate, and filters water. Despite its importance, soil is facing numerous threats, including soil degradation, low soil fertility, soil salinity and pollution. The consequences of soil degradation are far-reaching, affecting not only the environment but also human health and food security.
As we celebrate this day, let us recognize the challenges posed by climate change, and soil degradation. It’s a collective responsibility to protect and conserve this vital resource for future generations.
The students of Soil and Environmental Sciences took an active part in world soil day and prepared models related to world soil day and its theme.
