Islamabad: President Asif Ali Zardari has reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to ending violence against women and girls, marking the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. He emphasized that violence against women is not only a personal tragedy but also a violation of human rights and a barrier to social progress.

Expanding Efforts Against Digital Violence

Highlighting this year’s theme, “UNITE to End Digital Violence against All Women and Girls,” the president called for urgent action to address the growing threat of online abuse. He urged governments, technology companies, and individuals to strengthen preventive strategies, survivor support systems, and systemic reforms to combat digital violence.

Legislative and Institutional Measures

President Zardari noted that Pakistan has taken significant steps to protect women. These include the Protection Against Harassment of Women at the Workplace (Amendment) Act 2022, the Anti-Rape (Investigation and Trial) Act 2021, and the Enforcement of Women’s Property Rights Act 2020. The Prevention of Trafficking in Persons Act 2018 also provides safeguards against coercion and exploitation.

Support structures such as the National Commission on the Status of Women, Family Protection Centers, and the toll-free helpline 1099 have been established to assist survivors. He also highlighted progress in curbing child marriage, with Sindh, Islamabad, and Punjab setting the minimum age at 18, urging other provinces to follow suit.

Call for Collective Responsibility

The president stressed that laws must not only be enacted but fully implemented. He called on government institutions, civil society, and communities to intensify efforts against violence and discrimination. He urged citizens to challenge exclusion and silence, noting that real change begins at home and in workplaces.

National Resolve for a Safer Future

President Zardari extended appreciation to survivors, activists, and service providers working to ensure dignity and safety for women. He pledged continued national resolve to build a society where women’s rights are protected and gender-based violence is no longer tolerated.
