UN Agencies Celebrate 80 Years of the United Nations in Peshawar

UN agencies, in partnership with the University of Agriculture, Peshawar, commemorated United Nations Day 2025 at the FAO Sub-Office, marking 80 years of the UN’s founding vision. The event celebrated a shared global commitment to peace, development, and human rights under the theme: “Better Together: 80 Years and More for Peace, Development, and Human Rights.”

Commitment to Inclusion and Sustainability

The gathering brought together representatives from various UN agencies, provincial government departments, academic institutions, and students. Participants reaffirmed their dedication to sustainable development and inclusion, with a focus on marginalized communities, refugees, displaced populations, women and girls, and Persons with Disabilities across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Field Experiences and Local Impact

The event opened with welcome remarks from the Officer In Charge of FAO Sub-Office KP, who emphasized climate resilience and sustainable livelihoods. The acting Chair of the UN Provincial Programme Team reflected on the UN’s eight-decade journey and the continued importance of multilateral cooperation under the United Nations Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework.

A segment titled “UN Day Voices” featured personal stories from UN staff working in the field. These accounts highlighted advocacy for women’s rights, refugee support, flood response, and engagement with displaced communities—offering a human perspective on the work being done in Pakistan.

Humanitarian Programs and Climate Action

The formal ceremony concluded with a symbolic cake-cutting, celebrating 80 years of UN service and partnership with Pakistan. Participants also planted saplings on the university grounds, reinforcing their commitment to climate action and environmental sustainability.

Exhibition stalls hosted by UN agencies displayed refugee-made handicrafts and program highlights, offering insights into ongoing humanitarian response, early recovery, and self-reliance initiatives for Afghan refugees and vulnerable Pakistanis.

Strengthening Partnership for Peace and Development

The United Nations Day 2025 celebration in Peshawar served as a powerful reminder of the impact of collective action. It reaffirmed the enduring partnership between UN agencies, the Government of Pakistan, and local communities in advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), promoting inclusion, and building a more peaceful and resilient future.
