British High Commissioner to Pakistan Jane Marriott called on Speaker of the National Assembly Sardar Ayaz Sadiq at Parliament House in Islamabad, where both sides discussed bilateral relations, parliamentary cooperation, and key regional and global issues.
During the meeting, the speaker said Pakistan places high importance on its historic and friendly relations with the United Kingdom, rooted in shared democratic values, mutual respect, and strong people-to-people links. He stressed the need to further strengthen parliamentary and public-level engagement, noting that closer interaction would enhance mutual understanding between the two countries.
Sardar Ayaz Sadiq highlighted the role of parliament in fostering inclusive democracy, stating that the opposition is an integral part of the National Assembly and that he maintains cordial relations with all members without discrimination. He reaffirmed his commitment to consensus-based and inclusive parliamentary traditions.
The speaker also appreciated the United Kingdom’s support in strengthening Pakistan’s parliamentary committee system, informing the high commissioner that all standing committees of the National Assembly are fully functional and actively contributing to legislation and oversight. He added that Pakistan has faced terrorism for decades and remains fully committed to countering the threat with determination.
Briefing the visiting diplomat on parliamentary initiatives, the speaker said the Special Parliamentary Committee on Gender Mainstreaming and the Women’s Parliamentary Caucus are playing an active role in promoting women’s rights and welfare. He also noted that a Parliamentary Caucus on Child Rights has been established to safeguard and promote the well-being of children.
Jane Marriott appreciated the speaker’s inclusive and non-discriminatory approach to parliamentary affairs and his efforts to take all members of the National Assembly along. She reaffirmed the United Kingdom’s commitment to further strengthening bilateral and parliamentary relations with Pakistan.
