WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump issued a rare rebuke to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu over Israel’s recent strikes on Hamas targets in Qatar. Trump emphasized that Washington had no prior knowledge of the attack and stressed it could undermine peace efforts in the Middle East.
Trump Distances Himself From Israeli Strikes
Speaking to reporters in Washington, Trump said, “We want the hostages back, but we are not thrilled about the way that went down today.” He clarified that the decision was made solely by Netanyahu, not by the United States.
The strike on Doha was especially sensitive as Qatar serves as a key mediator in Gaza negotiations, while also hosting a large US airbase. Trump noted that Qatar remains a strong ally of Washington and warned that unilateral actions risk damaging delicate diplomatic efforts.
Concerns Over Peace Talks and Regional Stability
In a post on Truth Social, Trump wrote that bombing inside Qatar “does not advance Israel or America’s goals.” He highlighted that Qatar has been taking “brave risks” to broker peace and stressed the need to protect the Gulf state’s role as mediator.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt echoed Trump’s concerns, stating the president delivered a “very clear” message to Netanyahu. Trump later confirmed he had spoken directly with the Israeli leader, urging him to pursue peace despite the setback.
US Assures Qatar of Support
Following the incident, Trump assured Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani that “such a thing will not happen again on their soil.” He also directed Secretary of State Marco Rubio to finalize a defense cooperation agreement with Doha.
Qatar’s foreign ministry voiced anger, saying US officials warned only as explosions shook Doha. The strikes further fueled regional instability. They came months after Iran launched missiles at the US Al Udeid base in response to American strikes on Iranian facilities.
A Rare Public Criticism
Trump has been a consistent supporter of Netanyahu since returning to the Oval Office in January. His decision to openly rebuke Netanyahu over Qatar strikes signals growing US frustration with Israel’s unilateral actions that threaten Washington’s diplomatic priorities.
