SHANGLA — Three police personnel were martyred when militants opened fire on a police team during a search and clearance operation in Shangla on Monday, officials said. Security forces returned fire, and several militants were reported killed in the exchange.

According to police sources, the operation was launched on intelligence reports about the presence of militants in and around the Puron area, which falls under the jurisdiction of Kabalgarm Police Station. Police teams had cordoned off suspected locations when they came under heavy gunfire.

Head Constable Maqbool Ahmad and constables Fida Hussain and Saeed ur Rehman were killed in the attack, officials confirmed.

Police responded with retaliatory fire, resulting in the deaths of several militants. Some suspects managed to escape by taking advantage of the mountainous terrain, according to security sources.

Operation expanded in affected area

Authorities said the search operation has been expanded, with additional police contingents deployed to prevent further movement by militants and to clear surrounding hills and forests.

Reinforcements from Police Lines Alpurai and other security agencies joined the operation. Check-posts were established at key entry and exit points, and snap-checking was initiated to maintain security.

Officials said efforts are under way to identify the slain militants and gather information about their networks and facilitators in the region.

Funeral held with state honours

Funeral prayers for the three martyred officers were offered with full state honours at Police Lines Headquarters in Alpurai. Senior police officials, district administration representatives and local residents attended the ceremony.

Police authorities said operations against militant groups would continue in Shangla and adjoining areas. Residents have been advised to remain vigilant and cooperate with law enforcement agencies until the operation is completed.
