Think Before You Switch On the AC! Doctors Issue Summer Health Warning

3 Min Read

Health experts are advising people to avoid switching on the air conditioner (AC) immediately after returning home from extreme heat, warning that a sudden change in temperature may put unnecessary stress on the body and trigger a range of health problems.

According to medical professionals, the body works continuously to regulate its internal temperature. During hot weather, it cools itself by producing sweat and widening blood vessels. Moving directly from intense heat into a very cold environment can expose the body to a sudden temperature shift, sometimes referred to as thermal shock.

Sudden Temperature Changes Can Affect the Body

Doctors say a rapid transition from extreme heat to a cold indoor environment may lead to symptoms such as headache, sore throat, cough, dizziness, fatigue, shortness of breath, and general discomfort.

People with asthma, allergies, or other respiratory conditions may be more sensitive to abrupt temperature changes and could experience more severe symptoms.

Give Your Body Time to Cool Down

Health experts recommend spending a few minutes in a shaded or naturally cool area after coming indoors before turning on the AC or sitting directly in front of cold air.

Allowing the body to gradually adjust to the lower temperature can reduce physical stress and improve overall comfort.

Stay Hydrated During Hot Weather

Experts also stress the importance of drinking enough water after spending time outdoors in high temperatures. Heat increases the risk of dehydration, and proper hydration helps the body regulate its temperature more effectively.

Replacing lost fluids before entering a cold environment may also reduce strain on the body’s cooling system.

Keep Your AC at a Moderate Temperature

Medical professionals note that air conditioners can dry out the nose and throat, potentially causing irritation, dryness, or coughing, especially when the temperature is set too low or cold air blows directly onto the body.

To stay comfortable and healthy during the summer, experts recommend using the air conditioner at a moderate temperature, staying well hydrated, and avoiding prolonged exposure to direct cold airflow immediately after returning from the heat.
