“Humanity and nature are inseparably connected.” This timeless truth reflects the fundamental reality that human survival depends entirely on the balance of nature. Life on Earth exists through a delicate ecological system in which air, water, soil, forests, wildlife, and all living organisms are interconnected.
Whenever humanity has assumed itself to be the absolute master of nature and attempted to reshape the environment according to its own desires, nature has responded with severe consequences. History, as well as the modern world, bears witness that ignoring the laws of nature has resulted in devastating environmental crises affecting every aspect of human life.
Among the most alarming consequences are:
Climate Change and Global Warming: Since the Industrial Revolution, massive emissions from factories, power plants, and vehicles have increased greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, trapping heat and causing a steady rise in global temperatures.
Melting Glaciers: Centuries-old ice sheets in the polar regions are melting at an unprecedented pace, leading to rising sea levels and placing coastal cities around the world at increasing risk of flooding.
Extreme Weather, Unseasonal Rainfall, and Floods: Human interference with natural ecosystems has transformed life-giving rainfall into destructive floods, as witnessed in Pakistan and many other parts of the world in recent years.
Severe Droughts: Regions that once received adequate rainfall are now facing prolonged droughts, resulting in water shortages, declining agricultural productivity, and threats to food security.
Emerging Diseases and Biodiversity Loss: Deforestation and the destruction of biodiversity have increased the transmission of previously unknown viruses and diseases from wildlife to humans, leading to global health emergencies.
Air and Water Pollution: The excessive release of chemicals into the environment has contaminated the air we breathe and the water we drink, making access to clean natural resources increasingly difficult.
Against this backdrop, the international seminar organized by the National Academy of Forestry and Grassland Administration (NAFGA) in Beijing represents a timely and significant initiative toward global environmental protection and the sustainable management of natural resources. The seminar has brought together experts from different regions of the world to exchange experiences, discuss local environmental challenges, and explore practical solutions for ecological restoration.
A central theme of the seminar is Ecological Restoration, with particular emphasis on Assisted Natural Regeneration (ANR)—an approach that supports nature’s own regenerative capacity rather than relying on excessive chemical or artificial interventions. The objective is to restore degraded forests, grasslands, and ecosystems to their natural state while ensuring long-term environmental sustainability
Chinese President Xi Jinping’s commitment to ecological conservation is reflected in his development philosophy that “lucid waters and lush mountains are invaluable assets.” This vision recognizes that natural resources, once destroyed, cannot easily be restored. Therefore, ecological solutions are essential for protecting forests, water resources, and biodiversity for future generations.
Unlike chemical-intensive methods that often degrade soil fertility and disrupt ecosystems over time, biological restoration strengthens ecosystems naturally, enhances soil health, and ensures sustainable environmental management.
During the seminar, environmental experts emphasized that combating climate change, air pollution, desertification, and ecological degradation requires coordinated international efforts and the implementation of large-scale initiatives similar to China’s Three-North Shelterbelt Forest Program (TSFP).
Mr. Yang Xin’an, Deputy Director General of the Ecological Restoration Center of the National Academy of Forestry and Grassland Administration (NAFGA), explained that the success of the program has been guided by four fundamental principles:

Development Philosophy
Development Goals
Mr. Yang further explained that until around 2012, Beijing suffered from severe smog, posing serious health risks and affecting the quality of life for millions of residents. Recognizing the urgency of the crisis, President Xi Jinping directed that air pollution become a national priority. The issue was subsequently addressed at the 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, leading to comprehensive environmental reforms.
Within approximately a decade, Beijing achieved remarkable success in dramatically reducing smog through a combination of strategic policy measures. Large-scale tree plantation campaigns transformed vacant urban spaces into green areas, while the country accelerated the transition from gasoline-powered vehicles to electric mobility. The production and promotion of electric vehicles became a central component of China’s environmental strategy, significantly reducing urban emissions.
To support ecological restoration nationwide, China introduced a series of landmark measures under the Three-North Shelterbelt Program, including:
A nationwide ban on commercial logging in 2016, accompanied by financial compensation and alternative livelihood opportunities for individuals whose employment depended on the forestry sector.
Comprehensive forest restoration policies aimed at expanding forest cover, protecting wildlife, and strengthening biodiversity conservation through institutional reforms and financial support for both public and private forestry initiatives.
Science-based afforestation strategies, developed through continuous research and field experience to maximize ecological effectiveness.
Modern forest management and tending operations, ensuring healthier forests and improved long-term sustainability.
Institutional restructuring, allowing surplus personnel to be reassigned to other productive sectors while maintaining the efficiency of environmental programs.
The seminar also highlighted China’s commitment to sharing its ecological restoration experience with developing countries by promoting low-cost, environmentally sustainable, and scientifically proven solutions. Through knowledge exchange and international cooperation, the program aims to help other nations adopt successful restoration models tailored to their own environmental conditions.
China’s experience demonstrates that ecological restoration is not merely an environmental obligation—it is a long-term investment in economic resilience, public health, and sustainable development.
China’s Three-North Shelterbelt Forest Program (TSFP)—widely known as the “Green Great Wall”—is regarded as one of the most ambitious ecological restoration initiatives in human history. Launched in 1978, the program was designed to combat desertification, reduce soil erosion, improve environmental quality, and restore ecological balance across China’s northern, northwestern, and northeastern regions.
Covering an area of approximately 4.07 million square kilometers, the project is expected to continue until 2050, making it the world’s largest and longest-running afforestation and environmental restoration program.
The need for such a monumental initiative arose after decades of excessive deforestation along the Yellow and Yangtze River basins and in Inner Mongolia and northeastern China. Unsustainable exploitation of forest resources had triggered severe soil erosion, devastating floods, expanding deserts, declining biodiversity, and significant economic losses, while millions of people experienced deteriorating living conditions.
Over the past several decades, the Three-North Shelterbelt Program has produced remarkable environmental achievements.
One of its greatest successes has been the substantial expansion of forest cover. When the program began, forests covered only 5.05 percent of the targeted regions. Today, forest coverage has increased to approximately 13.84 percent, representing one of the largest increases in forest resources ever recorded.
The campaign has also resulted in the planting of more than 66 billion trees, transforming vast stretches of barren land into productive forests and ecological shelterbelts.
Another extraordinary achievement is the restoration of more than 32 million hectares of degraded land, an area roughly comparable to the total landmass of Japan. These restored ecosystems now serve as natural barriers against wind erosion, improve soil fertility, conserve water resources, and provide habitats for wildlife.
The program has significantly slowed the expansion of major deserts such as the Gobi and Taklamakan, reducing the frequency and intensity of dust storms that once affected Beijing and many other Chinese cities.
China has also restored approximately 53 percent of its degraded desertified land through biological restoration techniques, including straw-grid stabilization, drought-resistant vegetation, and other nature-based solutions. These methods have proven both environmentally sustainable and economically viable.
During the 14th Five-Year Plan (2021–2025), China accelerated its ecological restoration efforts at an unprecedented pace. More than 13.33 million hectares of forests and grasslands were successfully restored, demonstrating the country’s long-term commitment to environmental sustainability.
International recognition has also followed these remarkable achievements. In October 2025, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) honored the Three-North Shelterbelt Program with its prestigious Award for Achievement, recognizing its outstanding contribution to environmental protection, poverty reduction, ecological restoration, and food security.
China’s contribution to global greening has likewise been exceptional. Scientific studies indicate that in recent years approximately one-quarter of the world’s net increase in green vegetation has originated from China, with the Three-North Shelterbelt Program serving as one of the principal driving forces behind this achievement.
Between 2025 and 2026, the Chinese government further strengthened the initiative by investing 57.7 billion yuan in 369 major ecological restoration projects, reinforcing its determination to build a greener, healthier, and more climate-resilient future.
One of the program’s latest milestones has been the completion of a 3,000-kilometre green ecological belt surrounding the Taklamakan Desert, effectively creating a natural barrier that helps contain shifting sands and prevents further desert expansion.
These accomplishments demonstrate that large-scale ecological restoration is not merely an environmental aspiration—it is a practical and achievable strategy capable of transforming landscapes, protecting biodiversity, strengthening economies, and improving the quality of life for present and future generations
The success of China’s Three-North Shelterbelt Forest Program offers an inspiring lesson for the entire world. It demonstrates that environmental degradation is neither inevitable nor irreversible. With visionary leadership, sound policies, scientific planning, sustained investment, and active public participation, even the most severe ecological challenges can be overcome.
For developing countries, particularly those facing rapid deforestation, desertification, water scarcity, and the growing impacts of climate change, China’s experience provides a practical model for ecological restoration. Nature-based solutions are often more sustainable, cost-effective, and resilient than environmentally damaging alternatives. Investing in forests, grasslands, wetlands, and biodiversity is ultimately an investment in national prosperity, public health, food security, and climate resilience.
The world is increasingly realizing that the future of humanity does not lie in conquering nature but in living in harmony with it. Unfortunately, uncontrolled urbanization has replaced fertile agricultural lands with concrete structures, while industrial emissions and other forms of pollution have further degraded the natural environment. In many parts of the world, people now struggle to breathe clean air and access safe drinking water—resources that were once taken for granted.
Every conflict with nature carries consequences. Climate change, biodiversity loss, land degradation, and environmental pollution are clear reminders that humanity cannot thrive by violating the ecological principles upon which life itself depends.
The path forward is therefore a return to nature—not by abandoning development, but by pursuing development that respects ecological limits and safeguards the planet for future generations. Sustainable progress requires balancing economic growth with environmental stewardship, ensuring that development today does not compromise the well-being of tomorrow.
The Three-North Shelterbelt Forest Program stands as compelling evidence that environmental restoration is not merely an ecological responsibility but a strategic investment in human survival. It reminds us that forests are more than collections of trees; they are living ecosystems that regulate climate, conserve water, protect biodiversity, support livelihoods, and sustain civilization itself.
As the global community confronts increasingly complex environmental challenges, international cooperation, scientific innovation, and the exchange of successful experiences will become more important than ever. Programs like China’s Green Great Wall demonstrate that when governments, scientists, communities, and international partners work together with a shared vision, environmental recovery on a massive scale is both possible and achievable.
Ultimately, humanity and nature are inseparable. Protecting the environment is not simply about preserving landscapes—it is about protecting our own future. The healthier our ecosystems become, the healthier, safer, and more prosperous human societies will be.
