Tesla has unveiled its next-generation Roadster sports car, showcasing a dramatic demonstration in which the vehicle briefly lifted off the ground, rotated in the air and landed safely.
The new Roadster has been developed with thrusters inspired by SpaceX rocket technology, according to the information provided. The vehicle uses compressed-air thrusters and around 10 nozzles to enable its aerial maneuvers.
During the demonstration, the Roadster reportedly moved in reverse on a ramp, jumped into the air, rotated during flight and then returned safely to the ground.
However, the vehicle has not been demonstrated as a continuously flying car like an aircraft or helicopter. Its aerial capability, as presented, is limited to brief airborne maneuvers.
Tesla says the Roadster can accelerate from 0 to 60 miles per hour in less than one second, while its top speed is claimed to exceed 230 miles per hour.
The company has presented the vehicle primarily as a showcase of its advanced technology and engineering capabilities.
According to Elon Musk, Tesla plans to begin production of the Roadster in 2028. The concept was originally unveiled in 2017, with deliveries initially promised for 2020, but the project has faced multiple delays.
