SWAT: A remote-controlled improvised explosive device (IED) exploded near the residence of Awami National Party (ANP) leader Mumtaz Ali Khan in the Shakardara area of Matta Tehsil on Monday, officials said, adding that no casualties were reported.
The blast near the ANP leader’s residence in Swat caused damage to the road but did not result in any injuries. Authorities said the incident highlights ongoing security concerns in parts of the region.
Police launch investigation
Police officials said approximately 6 to 7 kilograms of explosives had been planted on the roadside, creating a large crater after the explosion. Law enforcement personnel reached the site soon after the blast, cordoned off the area and collected evidence.
Officials added that an investigation has been launched to determine the nature of the device and identify those responsible.
Previous incident at same location
Authorities recalled that a similar attack took place on November 12, 2025, when Mumtaz Ali Khan’s vehicle was targeted at the same location. He remained unharmed in that incident, although his vehicle sustained significant damage.
Jirga condemns attack
The Swat Qaumi Jirga condemned the blast and expressed concern over the security situation. The jirga called for the immediate arrest of those involved and urged authorities to enhance protection for political and social figures facing threats.
Officials said further developments will depend on the outcome of the ongoing investigation.
