Australian batting star Steve Smith has reportedly avoided a serious neck injury, raising expectations that he will return for the opening home Test against New Zealand in December.
Australia are scheduled to host New Zealand in a four-Test series, with the first match set to begin on December 9 at Perth Stadium.
According to Reuters, the 37-year-old Smith was ruled out of Australia’s third and decisive Test against South Africa in Cape Town after experiencing neck pain for several days.
Scans Confirm Cervical Facet Joint Injury
Medical examinations and scans confirmed an injury to Smith’s cervical facet joint, which plays an important role in stabilising the neck and supporting its movement.
Cricket Australia said Smith would continue his treatment and rehabilitation, with his availability for the upcoming home Test series against New Zealand expected.
Smith Misses Decisive Test Despite Net Practice
Australian team staff had hoped Smith would be fit to play the decisive Test at Newlands. He even batted in the nets on Sunday, but a medical assessment found him not fully fit for the match.
All-rounder Cameron Green replaced Smith in the Cape Town Test, batting at his usual No. 4 position.
At the end of the second day, Australia had reached 330 for four in reply to South Africa’s first-innings total of 329, according to the supplied report.
Smith’s recovery will be closely watched as Australia prepare for their December series against New Zealand.
