ISLAMABAD, Jan 10 — Sui Southern Gas Company Limited (SSGC) has reduced unaccounted-for-gas (UFG) losses by 60% between FY19 and FY25, reflecting one of the most significant efficiency gains in Pakistan’s energy sector. The company attributes the achievement to structural, technical, and governance reforms carried out over several years.
According to official data, UFG declined by 43.6 billion cubic feet during the period, including 12 billion cubic feet saved in Balochistan between FY23 and FY25 through targeted interventions in high-loss areas. The reduction highlights improved accountability and operational efficiency across the distribution network.
SSGC has backed these reforms with major capital investments. Spending on gas infrastructure rose from Rs9 billion in FY22 to Rs17 billion in FY23, followed by Rs24 billion in FY24 and Rs37 billion in FY25. The company projects capitalization of Rs40 billion for FY26 and FY27. As part of this drive, approximately 5,000 kilometers of distribution pipelines have been rehabilitated across Sindh.

Operational restructuring included the creation of zonal structures, new regional divisions, and redefined departmental responsibilities. The company said these changes, combined with vigilant monitoring and gas load management, have enabled more efficient use of limited gas volumes.
Digitalization has also played a key role. Automation systems were deployed at 50 town border stations (TBSs) under a pilot project, with work underway to automate 47 more TBSs and 18 Sales Meter Stations (SMSs). SSGC now monitors nearly 100% of gas volumes through check meters, while 78.2% are tracked via remote data acquisition systems.
Measurement accuracy has been strengthened through upgraded electronic volume correctors, improved vigilance against suction devices, and better meter sizing. An international consultant has verified the reliability of the measurement infrastructure. The company has also enhanced purchase and sales reconciliations at SMSs and TBSs through detailed surveys and correction of tagging inaccuracies.
SSGC said the combination of infrastructure upgrades, automation, and tighter controls has significantly reduced system losses, contributing to greater transparency and efficiency in Pakistan’s gas sector.
