Spinwam-1 gas production begins in Waziristan block, boosting Pakistan’s energy supply

Islamabad, Pakistan — The Waziristan Joint Venture (WJV) has started production from the Spinwam-1 exploratory well in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, marking a new addition to Pakistan’s domestic gas supply and energy infrastructure.

Operated by Mari Energies Limited, the project is part of ongoing efforts to develop indigenous hydrocarbon resources and reduce reliance on imported energy. The inauguration ceremony was held at the company’s head office and attended by Federal Minister for Petroleum Ali Pervaiz Malik.

Officials said the Spinwam-1 production is expected to strengthen energy security by increasing gas availability for the national grid. The development follows the earlier Shewa-1 discovery in the same block.

Production capacity and infrastructure

According to project details, Spinwam-1 is initially producing around 40 million standard cubic feet per day (MMSCFD) of gas and approximately 200 barrels per day of condensate from the Lockhart reservoir.

With the addition of Spinwam-1, total gas output from the Waziristan Block is expected to reach nearly 100 MMSCFD, along with about 800 barrels per day of condensate.

The production has been integrated into the national system through a transmission pipeline completed by Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL), connecting the Shewa-1 and Spinwam-1 wells to the gas network.

Collaboration and security support

The Waziristan Joint Venture includes Mari Energies Limited as operator with a 55% stake, alongside Oil and Gas Development Company Limited (35%) and Orient Petroleum Inc. (10%).

Officials acknowledged the role of law enforcement agencies, contractors, and energy sector workers in completing the project under challenging operational and security conditions. Tributes were also paid to personnel who lost their lives or were injured during the project.

Expanding domestic energy resources

The development of Spinwam-1 is part of broader efforts to enhance local energy production and improve supply stability. Officials said continued exploration in the Waziristan Block could further contribute to meeting Pakistan’s growing energy demand.
