Social Attitudes and Depression

By: Syeda Shabana Rizvi

Have we ever paused to reflect on how, through our everyday words and attitudes, we sometimes wound the hearts of those around us? At times, it is through sarcasm; at times, through comparisons; and sometimes through a simple sentence such as, “You don’t have what it takes.” In those moments, we forget that every human being is a universe in themselves—unique, valuable, and worthy of respect.

The roots of depression often grow from these seemingly small acts of insensitivity. When a person repeatedly hears that they are a failure, weak, incapable, or unimportant, they gradually begin to retreat into themselves. Slowly, silently, and painfully, they start losing faith in their own worth. And with time, they may begin to destroy the beautiful person they once were.

Remember: to the world, we may be just one individual, but to our loved ones, we may be their entire world. Your smile, your presence, your support, or even a few kind words can give someone the strength to face another day. Likewise, neglecting someone, constantly ignoring them, or subjecting them to relentless criticism can push their world into darkness.

Mental health is not an issue that concerns only doctors and psychologists. It is a shared responsibility that begins within our homes and extends to our neighborhoods, workplaces, educational institutions, and society as a whole. Sometimes, simply saying, “I understand you,” or quietly sitting beside someone without judgment can become a source of immense comfort.

A little empathy can save a heart from breaking. A little encouragement can restore someone’s lost confidence. A little kindness can become the reason someone chooses hope over despair.
Imagine how many wounded hearts could find their way out of darkness if we made it our daily practice to light a small lamp of compassion and encouragement for one another. We may never know how deeply our words affect others, but we can always choose to make those words kinder.

The truth is simple: let your attitudes be gentle, your words compassionate, and your hearts willing to heal rather than hurt. Learn to place a balm on the wounds of others instead of adding to their pain. This is the path that can lead us towards a happier, healthier, and more compassionate society.
A positive attitude is the foundation of a positive society.
