If you’re struggling to quit smoking, there’s good news. Researchers have developed an easy method to help people break free from the habit with the use of smartwatches.
A study conducted at Bristol University in the UK revealed that smartwatches could assist in quitting smoking. Researchers developed a motion sensor software that detects hand movements associated with holding a cigarette.
When the software identifies the cigarette, the smartwatch alerts the user with a flash on the screen and sends a vibration with a text message designed to help quit smoking.
Researchers believe this intervention can assist individuals during moments of weakness, helping them stay committed to their goal of quitting. The study involved 18 participants aged 18 to 70, all of whom were trying to quit smoking. The smartwatch, equipped with the app, was worn by participants for two weeks, during which they also answered a questionnaire.
66% of participants said they were willing to wear the motion-sensing smartwatch, while 61% found the text messages helpful.
