SWAT: A solar-powered, AI-enabled smart irrigation system was inaugurated at the Agricultural Research Institute (ARI) Mingora by Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Secretary Agriculture Dr Muhammad Bakhtiar Khan, aimed at improving water efficiency and promoting climate-resilient farming.

The system has been installed by the Sarhad Rural Support Programme (SRSP) with support from Oxford Policy Management (OPM), as part of efforts to introduce modern agricultural technologies in the region.

Focus on water efficiency and climate resilience

Officials said the project is designed to optimise water usage in farming and support sustainable agricultural practices. The system uses advanced technology to monitor and manage irrigation, helping farmers reduce wastage and improve crop productivity.

During the visit, the secretary was briefed on the project’s objectives and observed its practical application in orchards and vegetable fields.

Officials review project implementation

Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) Swat Mohibullah, Director General Agriculture Research Dr Muhammad Abdul Rauf, Director ARI Mingora Dr Roshan Ali, and SRSP Chief Executive Officer Masood ul Mulk were also present on the occasion.

The secretary inspected key components of the system, including the head unit and control room, and reviewed its performance in field conditions.

Emphasis on modern agriculture

Speaking at the event, Dr Bakhtiar Khan highlighted the importance of adopting technology-driven solutions in agriculture. He called for strengthening public-private partnerships and ensuring that research outcomes are effectively transferred to farmers.

He added that initiatives such as smart irrigation systems, microfinance schemes, and cold storage facilities would be expanded in the upcoming fiscal year to support the agricultural sector.
