The Sindh government distributed 300 pink electric scooters to women in Karachi on Sunday as part of an initiative aimed at improving mobility and expanding opportunities for women. The distribution, organized by the Sindh Transport Department and the Sindh Mass Transit Authority (SMTA), coincided with International Women’s Day.
The ceremony was held at a local hotel in Karachi, where Sindh Senior Minister for Information and Transport Sharjeel Inam Memon addressed participants and highlighted the importance of supporting women’s participation in public and economic life.
Memon said International Women’s Day provides an opportunity to recognize the contributions of women in society. He noted that women have historically faced limited opportunities but have demonstrated their ability to lead and contribute across different sectors.
He also referred to former prime minister Benazir Bhutto, saying her leadership played a significant role in advancing women’s participation in politics and public life in Pakistan.
Government initiatives aimed at women’s mobility
According to the minister, the Sindh government has introduced several initiatives to support women’s mobility and economic participation. These include the Pink Bus Service in Karachi, which provides dedicated transport for women and also employs women drivers.
Memon said the government is planning a broader program to distribute electric scooters to women in the province. The initiative aims to provide up to five million scooters in phases to improve access to transportation.

Under the proposed program, applicants would need a permanent driving licence and proof of education or employment. Women selected for the scheme would also receive free driving training to help them safely operate the scooters.
Officials say the initiative is intended to address mobility challenges faced by many women and expand access to work, education and public services.
