A 19-year-old woman in India’s Uttar Pradesh state reportedly climbed a 100-foot mobile tower to insist on marrying her boyfriend, eventually climbing down after a Muslim cleric solemnised their nikah through a video call.
According to Indian media reports, the woman, identified as Sahiba, also known as Mehak, wanted to marry her 21-year-old boyfriend, Nooruddin. However, both families reportedly opposed the relationship.
Following an argument with her mother over the marriage, Mehak climbed the mobile tower in anger, prompting an emergency response from police and local residents.
Four-Hour Standoff
Police said Mehak remained on the tower for approximately four hours. Relatives, residents and police personnel repeatedly tried to persuade her to come down.
However, she reportedly threatened to jump if her demand was not met.
Authorities contacted Nooruddin, who was working in Mumbai at the time, while efforts were made to resolve the dispute between the two families.
Online Nikah Leads to Her Rescue
When the families reportedly failed to reach an agreement, a local Muslim cleric conducted the couple’s nikah through a video call. Nooruddin participated online from Mumbai.
Following the ceremony, Mehak came down from the tower with police assistance, bringing the tense situation to an end.
The incident has attracted attention because of the unusual circumstances surrounding the reported marriage. The available report does not provide further details about the legal registration of the marriage or any subsequent family response.
