Located in district Skardu of Gilgit-Baltistan, Shangrila or Lower Kachura Lake is a beautiful and famous lake, just a twenty-minute drive from Skardu city.
A very beautiful hotel and tourist resort has been built on banks of Shangrila Lake to further enhance its beauty and it is an excellent place for tourists to stay. Established in Skardu-Baltistan, Shangrila Resort was the first tourist resort in the district.
The clear water, picturesque scenery, and pleasant weather of Shangrila Lake provide a unique experience for tourists. The snowy mountains, lush valleys, and beautiful landscapes surrounding this lake offer a paradise-like view. The tranquility and natural beauty here attract domestic and foreign tourists, and staying at the resort built on the banks of the lake is a memorable experience.
There is also a boating facility for tourists, where women and children enjoy a walk in the lake’s water. Tourists take pictures with the ship model on Shangri-La Lake, which has become a special identity of this place.
Shangrila Resort was built by the late Brigadier (Retd) Muhammad Aslam Khan, who was the first commander of the Northern Scouts and played a key role in the liberation of the Northern Areas in 1948. The resort was named after James Hilton’s book “Lost Horizon”, in which Shangrila was described as “heaven on earth”. The book narrated a fictional story in which an airplane crashes on a riverbank, and the surviving passengers reach a beautiful place called Shangrila.
The Shangrila Lake and Resort are not only famous for their natural beauty, but they can also become an important source of promoting tourism and earning huge foreign exchange for the country.
