SHANGLA (Report by Aftab Hussain): A joint jirga comprising political leaders, nationalist and democratic figures, religious scholars, lawyers and other stakeholders has condemned police actions against the homes, hujras and other premises of local Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leaders over the past four days following the imposition of governor’s rule and emergency measures in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
Organised by the Shangla Action Committee and the Shangla Bar Association, the jirga called for an immediate halt to such actions, stressing the need to protect Pashtun traditions, the sanctity of homes, citizens’ dignity and the region’s peace.
Participants agreed that Shangla belongs to people across political parties, communities and schools of thought. They said political differences should not undermine mutual respect, tolerance and social harmony.
The gathering expressed particular concern over reported police actions at the homes and hujras of local PTI leaders. Participants maintained that law enforcement agencies must perform their duties in accordance with the law while respecting citizens’ dignity, privacy and social traditions.
They emphasised that political disagreements are part of democracy and should be addressed through dialogue, tolerance and democratic processes rather than personal hostility, abusive language or unnecessary pressure on political opponents.
The jirga also called on all political parties and relevant stakeholders to work collectively to safeguard peace, civil rights and democratic values in Shangla.
Following the meeting, a delegation representing various political parties met district administration officials and conveyed its concerns over the reported police actions. The delegation urged the authorities to take immediate steps to protect the sanctity of homes and prevent incidents that could contribute to unrest or political tensions.
The delegation also called for clear instructions to relevant departments to ensure that official actions do not undermine local traditions or disturb public order.
The jirga was attended by Suleman Shah Khan Advocate, president of the District Bar Association and chairman of the Shangla Action Committee, alongside representatives of the Pakistan Muslim League, Pakistan Peoples Party, Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam, Awami National Party, Jamaat-e-Islami and Qaumi Watan Party.
Participants reiterated their commitment to protecting Shangla’s peace, political tolerance, public dignity and cultural traditions, regardless of political affiliations.
