Pakistan white-ball captain Shaheen Shah Afridi has described Babar Azam as the backbone of the national team, saying the experienced batter is under no pressure ahead of the tri-nation series involving Pakistan, England and Sri Lanka.
Shaheen said the tri-nation series is important for Pakistan and that the team’s focus remains on preparing for and ultimately winning the World Cup.
He said Pakistan had performed well in T20 cricket and had used the previous four ODI series to build the team. The side is also working to prepare pitches and conditions in line with those expected at the upcoming mega event.
Praising Salman Ali Agha, Shaheen said the all-rounder is a quality cricketer and has recently scored a triple century in first-class cricket. He added that Salman understands his role in the team and is expected to contribute according to the requirements of the side.
Shaheen said there was strong harmony within the squad and that every player was focused on winning the World Cup.
Regarding Babar Azam, the captain said the senior batter remains a key player and has consistently scored runs for Pakistan.
“Babar Azam is the backbone of the team,” Shaheen said, adding that there was no pressure on Babar and that his experience remains valuable to the side.
Shaheen said the players were determined to give the nation reasons to celebrate and added that Pakistan had the batting strength to chase targets of 350 or even 400 runs, depending on the conditions.
“We will play according to what the conditions demand,” he said, adding that Pakistan has a strong batting order and that the primary focus is on winning matches.
The Pakistan captain also said young players are being given opportunities gradually. He highlighted the benefits of having Babar’s leadership experience around the squad, saying the players learn from his extensive experience as a former captain.
Shaheen further said Saim Ayub’s bowling will be very important for Pakistan in ODI cricket.
