Peshawar: The World Health Organization (WHO), in collaboration with Rehman Medical Institute, hosted a seminar to mark the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence. Held at Rehman Medical Institute, the seminar brought together experts from diverse fields to discuss gender-based violence (GBV) in the context of Pakistan, particularly in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP).
The event began with Tilawat and an overview of the seminar delivered by Dr. Nauman Ul Haq, WHO officer, who welcomed the participants and highlighted the global significance of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence campaign.
Colonel R. Mohammad Tariq Khan, Chief Operating Officer Chancellor of Rehman Medical Institute, delivered the welcome remarks, appreciating the efforts of WHO and the distinguished speakers.
Keynote Speakers and Highlights
The seminar featured impactful presentations by experts from healthcare, law enforcement, advocacy, and policymaking:
- Dr. Noreen Akhtar – A psychologist and GBV expert, Dr. Akhtar discussed “Equating Human Rights and Prioritizing Mental Health for All.” She underscored the critical intersection between mental health and human rights in GBV services.
- Ms. Shagufta Malik – Former MPA and women’s rights advocate, Ms. Malik spoke on “Empowering Women: Legislative and Policy Reforms Against GBV in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.” She shared her experiences in pushing legislative reforms to protect women.
- Ms. Mehwish Muhib – Advocate at the Peshawar High Court, Ms. Muhib delivered a talk on “Advocacy and Action: Strengthening Legal Protections Against GBV.” She focused on bolstering legal frameworks and the importance of the Anti-Rape Act’s Special Committee.
- Dr. Akhter Ali Shah – Former Inspector General of Police and Home Secretary, Dr. Shah highlighted “Building Safer Communities: The Role of Law Enforcement in Combating GBV.” His insights revolved around the need for systemic change within law enforcement to ensure safety.
Dr. Mohammad Babar Alam, WHO Head of Office for KP, elaborated on the health sector’s role in GBV response and the seminar’s objectives.
The event concluded with closing remarks from Prof. Dr. Ghulam Rasool, Principal of Rehman College of Dentistry, who thanked the attendees, speakers, and organizers for their invaluable contributions to the discussion on GBV.
