Pakistani actor Sanam Saeed has come to the defence of fellow actor Durefishan Saleem, criticising the intense online trolling surrounding Saleem’s English accent in the drama Dar-e-Nijaat.
In an Instagram Story shared on Monday, Saeed described the situation as “unsettling” and questioned why social media users had become so fixated on an actor’s accent.
Saeed said it was “very lame” to see people obsessing over Saleem’s accent and described the repeated criticism across social media as “downright mean” and inconsiderate of the actor’s feelings.
Why Is Durefishan Saleem Being Trolled?
Saleem plays Zaryab, the carefree younger daughter of a wealthy family, in Dar-e-Nijaat. Her character has studied at elite schools and is considering travelling to the United States for further education.
The character is shown speaking primarily in English with her sister, friends and boyfriend Zamil, played by Nameer Khan.
However, viewers have focused heavily on Saleem’s English accent, with many arguing that it does not convincingly match the character she is portraying.
Actors are often judged on how convincingly they portray their characters, and audiences naturally express opinions when a performance does not meet their expectations. However, Saeed’s comments highlight the difference between legitimate criticism and sustained personal attacks.
The controversy has therefore become less about whether viewers liked the character’s accent and more about how far online criticism should go when discussing an actor’s performance.
Saeed’s intervention has added another perspective to the debate, urging viewers to keep criticism focused on the performance rather than turning an artistic disagreement into personal trolling.
