In a recent podcast interview, former captain Shahid Afridi revealed that he had a phone conversation with Saime Ayub to check on his well-being. Saime mentioned that it could take him another three weeks before his rehab begins.
Afridi, offering advice as a big brother and cricketer, urged Saime not to rush back if he still feels any pain and to take full rest to avoid further complications.
Afridi acknowledged that Saime’s injury would certainly affect Pakistan’s performance, especially since the team lacks a proper backup. He also expressed hope that the national team would still perform well in the event.
Earlier, Saime Ayub had been included in the initial Champions Trophy squad, but the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is still waiting for his medical reports to make a final decision regarding his participation.
In Saime’s absence, there are chances that openers Fakhar Zaman and Imam-ul-Haq will return, both of whom played key roles in Pakistan’s victories during the 2023 World Cup.
It should be noted that during the first day of the Test against South Africa in Cape Town, Saime Ayub twisted his right ankle while fielding. Doctors have recommended six weeks of rest for him.
