LAHORE: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is reportedly considering Sahibzada Farhan for the permanent captaincy of the national T20I side, potentially replacing Salman Ali Agha, according to sources.
The move is part of a reported long-term strategy aimed at preparing Pakistan’s T20 setup for the 2028 ICC T20 World Cup. The PCB and team management are also looking to develop a wider pool of players who could form the core of the national side in the coming years.
Farhan has already been appointed captain of Pakistan’s men’s T20 squad for the 2026 Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan. The PCB confirmed his appointment when it announced the 15-member squad in June.
He is also reportedly expected to continue as captain for Pakistan’s upcoming three-match home T20I series against Sri Lanka, scheduled for October 9, 11 and 13 at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium.
According to reports, head coach Mike Hesson is in favour of retaining Farhan in the leadership role. However, his batting and captaincy performances during the Asian Games are expected to be assessed before the PCB makes a final decision on a permanent appointment.
Farhan himself has said he would welcome the opportunity to continue as Pakistan’s T20I captain if given the responsibility. However, he has stressed that his immediate focus remains on the Asian Games.
Pakistan’s T20 campaign at the Asian Games is scheduled to begin with the quarter-finals on September 28. The tournament will provide Farhan with an early opportunity to lead the side in international competition.
The PCB has yet to publicly confirm a permanent change in Pakistan’s T20I captaincy. The final decision is expected after the Asian Games.
