TEHRAN, October 19, 2026: Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov arrived in Tehran on Monday for his first visit to Iran since the outbreak of the war between the United States and Iran, as Moscow steps up diplomatic efforts to help end the conflict and ease tensions across the Middle East.
Lavrov is expected to meet Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi to discuss the ongoing conflict, regional security and possible diplomatic efforts to bring an end to hostilities.
According to Russian news agencies, Lavrov travelled to Tehran after holding talks with foreign ministers of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) in Bahrain on Sunday.
The visit comes amid growing diplomatic pressure for a negotiated settlement, with Gulf countries urging Russia to use its influence with Tehran to help stop attacks across the region.
Russia steps up diplomatic efforts to end Iran-US war
The Russian foreign minister’s visit is being viewed as part of Moscow’s efforts to expand its diplomatic role in addressing the conflict between Washington and Tehran.
Earlier this month, Russian President Vladimir Putin assured Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian that Moscow was prepared to participate in mediation efforts aimed at ending the war.
The discussions in Tehran are expected to focus on bilateral relations, regional tensions and diplomatic initiatives intended to reduce hostilities.
However, no immediate breakthrough on a ceasefire or de-escalation had been announced at the time of Lavrov’s arrival.
Gulf countries urge Russia to use influence over Iran
Lavrov’s visit follows meetings in Bahrain, where Gulf foreign ministers called on Moscow to play a more active role in efforts to restore regional stability.
During the discussions, Gulf countries urged Russia to use its diplomatic influence with Iran to help halt attacks in the region and encourage compliance with United Nations resolutions.
The appeal reflects growing concerns among Gulf states over the wider consequences of the conflict and the need for diplomatic engagement to prevent further escalation.
Lavrov to discuss trade, energy and regional security
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei said Lavrov’s visit would include discussions on regional and international developments, alongside a review of the implementation of agreements between Tehran and Moscow.
According to the Russian Foreign Ministry, the two sides will also discuss cooperation in trade, energy, investment and transportation.
The talks are expected to examine ongoing joint projects and ways to strengthen economic relations between Russia and Iran.
Lavrov’s arrival marks a significant diplomatic engagement between Moscow and Tehran during the conflict, although the prospects for an immediate ceasefire remain uncertain.
