ISLAMABAD — Chairperson of the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) Senator Rubina Khalid paid tribute to the role of women in society, saying women around the world continue to stand on the frontlines of social and economic challenges.

In a message issued on International Women’s Day, she said women form nearly half of the population but their participation in economic activities remains comparatively low, stressing that expanding access to education and economic opportunities is essential for meaningful empowerment.

Tribute to women’s resilience

Rubina Khalid said women often remain a “silent frontline” in times of conflict, hardship and social challenges, playing a crucial role in supporting families and communities.

She noted that former prime minister Benazir Bhutto laid the foundation for women’s leadership and empowerment in Pakistan, and envisioned a society where women are actively included in national development and decision-making.

Role of BISP in women’s economic support

The BISP chairperson said the Benazir Income Support Programme has become one of Pakistan’s largest social protection initiatives focused on women’s financial security and economic independence.

According to Khalid, the programme provides financial assistance and support to millions of women across the country, helping strengthen household stability and dignity. She added that women enrolled in the programme are recognized as heads of their households for the purpose of receiving support.

Commitment to equality and opportunity

She said President Asif Ali Zardari and PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari continue to work in line with Benazir Bhutto’s vision for advancing women’s rights and social inclusion in Pakistan.

Rubina Khalid emphasized that Pakistan’s long-term economic development is closely linked with women’s empowerment and greater participation in the workforce.
