Hassanabdal: The Punjab government has launched a Rs210 million development project to upgrade Hassanabdal’s infrastructure and enhance facilities for international visitors, particularly Sikh pilgrims, ahead of the upcoming pilgrimage season.

Officials said the initiative aims to transform the historic city into a more accessible and visually improved destination, supporting religious tourism and improving civic amenities. The project focuses on urban development, traffic management and public spaces around key religious sites.

Hassanabdal is home to Gurdwara Sri Panja Sahib, one of the most important Sikh religious sites after Golden Temple, attracting thousands of pilgrims annually, particularly during the Baisakhi festival and other religious occasions.

Infrastructure and beautification measures

According to Assistant Commissioner Ahsan Ali, the project includes shifting utility services underground to improve safety and reduce visual clutter. New entrance gates are also being constructed at key entry points to enhance the city’s appearance.

Road infrastructure is being upgraded with modern materials to improve mobility, while building facades are being renovated to create a more uniform urban outlook.

A dedicated parking facility is also under development to manage increased visitor traffic during peak pilgrimage periods.

Public spaces and tourism facilities

A central component of the project is the redesign of the public square in front of Gurdwara Sri Panja Sahib. The area is being developed into a landscaped space with modern amenities to accommodate gatherings of pilgrims.

Authorities are also establishing a food park within the square and developing a food street at Lalarukh Park to improve visitor experience. Restoration work is underway at the park, including its natural ponds and surrounding areas.

Boost to religious tourism

Officials said the project is part of broader efforts to promote Pakistan’s religious tourism sector and improve facilities for international visitors. Work is being expedited to complete major components before the Baisakhi festival in April.

Authorities expressed confidence that the initiative will enhance the city’s profile, support local economic activity and provide improved services to both residents and visitors.
