Electric truck owners looking to extend their off-grid capabilities now have a new option. Worksport, a New York-based manufacturer, has begun accepting orders for a solar-powered tonneau cover designed specifically for the Rivian R1T electric pickup. The product, named Solis, is the first of its kind tailored to the R1T and offers a renewable energy solution for outdoor enthusiasts and remote workers.
Energy Storage for Off-Grid Utility
The Solis tonneau integrates three solar panels capable of generating up to 250 watts under optimal conditions. While the panels alone provide limited utility, Worksport pairs the system with an external lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery pack that includes an inverter. This storage unit holds 1 kilowatt-hour of energy and can be fully charged in approximately four hours using the solar cover. Once charged, the battery can power tools, appliances, and camping gear through standard outlets and USB ports.
Flexible Fit and Scalable Options
The solar tonneau is compatible with Rivian R1T trucks regardless of whether they come with a factory-installed power retractable cover. Customers can also opt to upgrade the battery capacity for extended usage. Though the system was initially announced with higher specifications—650 watts of solar output and a 1.5 kWh battery—Worksport has since revised those figures downward. The company offers similar solar tonneau solutions for other truck models, including the Ford F-150, Jeep Gladiator, Chevrolet Silverado, and GMC Sierra.
Pricing and Availability
Pricing for the Rivian R1T-specific Solis cover starts at $1,999. The external battery and inverter are sold separately for an additional $949. Larger truck models may require higher-capacity covers, with prices reaching up to $2,499. While the Rivian R1T already features a built-in power export system capable of supplying energy to 120-volt outlets, the Solis system provides a supplementary source of power—especially useful in areas without access to EV charging infrastructure.
A Practical Addition for Remote Travel
The solar tonneau cover is positioned as a practical enhancement for those who frequently travel off-grid. Whether used for extended camping trips or remote work setups, the system offers a renewable energy backup that complements the R1T’s existing capabilities. As electric vehicles continue to evolve, accessories like the Solis reflect growing interest in sustainable, self-sufficient mobility solutions.
