RAWALPINDI — Pakistan Railways has taken a major step toward modernizing its infrastructure with the inauguration of the country’s first Safe and Smart Railway Station in Rawalpindi. The initiative, led by Federal Minister for Railways Muhammad Hanif Abbasi, marks a significant milestone in the government’s broader push to upgrade the national rail network.

Speaking to reporters during the launch ceremony, Abbasi emphasized that the transformation of railway stations is part of the prime minister’s vision to create a safer, more efficient, and passenger-friendly transport system. He confirmed that similar upgrades are planned for major stations across Pakistan.

Advanced Surveillance System Enhances Safety and Oversight

Rawalpindi Station now features a state-of-the-art security setup, including 143 surveillance cameras strategically installed to monitor platforms, ticketing areas, and surrounding premises. The system is designed to provide round-the-clock surveillance, improving both passenger safety and operational oversight.

Abbasi noted that the enhanced monitoring capabilities will not only deter criminal activity but also help ensure better supervision of railway personnel and services.

Passenger Facilities Get a Modern Makeover

In addition to the security upgrades, the minister inaugurated newly renovated lounges and waiting areas at the station. These modernized spaces include dedicated zones for families and women, along with amenities such as tea counters, refreshment kiosks, free Wi-Fi access, and ATM services.

Abbasi announced that similar facilities are being developed at other key stations nationwide, aiming to elevate the travel experience for all passengers.

Upgraded Train Rakes and Station Renovations Underway

The modernization effort extends beyond station infrastructure. Abbasi revealed that older train rakes are being phased out and replaced with refurbished models. On the Lahore–Rawalpindi route, three upgraded rakes are already in service, with a fourth expected to be operational by mid-November.

He also shared updates on other station renovations: Faisalabad Station’s refurbishment has been completed, while Karachi Cantt’s upgraded terminal is set to open soon.

A New Era for Pakistan Railways

The Safe and Smart Railway Station project reflects Pakistan Railways’ commitment to innovation, safety, and passenger comfort. With Rawalpindi leading the way, the initiative signals a broader transformation of the country’s rail infrastructure — one that aligns with global standards and responds to the evolving needs of travelers.
