NEW DELHI: Doctors in India have reported an extremely rare medical case involving a 16-year-old boy who developed a tooth in the upper part of his left eye socket.
According to the source report, the teenager visited doctors after developing a painless swelling above his left eye. Later, two hard, white points appeared between his eyebrow and eyelid.
A detailed examination and CT scan revealed what doctors described as a fully developed tooth in the upper portion of the eye socket.
What Is an Ectopic Tooth?
Doctors refer to the condition as an “ectopic tooth,” in which a tooth develops outside its normal location in the jaw.
Ectopic teeth have previously been reported in unusual locations, including parts of the nose and the roof of the mouth. However, the source report describes the eye-socket case as the first known case of its kind.
Doctors reportedly found no previous history of facial trauma or genetic disease in the teenager. Scans also showed no additional teeth elsewhere in the skull.
Tooth Successfully Removed
Given the unusual nature of the condition, doctors performed surgery to remove the additional tooth from the eye socket.
According to the report, the procedure was successful and the swelling disappeared following the operation. The source also states that the surgery helped prevent potential future complications involving the eye and surrounding structures.
The precise cause of the unusual development remains unclear, and medical experts are continuing to examine the condition.
