Raja Nasir Abbas alleges irregularities in Gilgit-Baltistan election process

ISLAMABAD: Opposition Leader in the Senate and Raja Nasir Abbas Chairman Raja Nasir Abbas has raised concerns over the conduct of the Gilgit-Baltistan elections, alleging that the electoral process was not transparent and did not accurately reflect the public mandate.

Speaking to journalists in Islamabad, Abbas claimed that delays in the announcement of election results and questions surrounding the electoral process had affected public confidence in the polls. He said the outcome of the elections had generated concerns among political stakeholders regarding transparency and fairness.

The senator also alleged that restrictions on information and media coverage in Gilgit-Baltistan limited public access to developments related to the elections.

Concerns over electoral transparency

Raja Nasir Abbas claimed that the election results did not reflect the will of voters and alleged that the electoral process had been influenced in a manner that affected the credibility of the polls.

He further alleged that candidates affiliated with PTI did not receive equal opportunities to participate in the election process and said political interference had impacted the overall electoral environment.

According to Abbas, such developments raise broader questions about democratic representation and public trust in electoral institutions.

Comments on governance and representation

The MWM leader also expressed concern about political developments in Gilgit-Baltistan, including issues related to governance, public representation, and resource management.

He alleged that political interventions and defections have weakened democratic institutions and limited the emergence of genuine public representatives.

Abbas maintained that the region’s residents should have the opportunity to choose their representatives through a transparent and credible electoral process.

The Election Commission and government authorities had not responded to the allegations at the time of filing this report.
