Afghanistan opener Rahmanullah Gurbaz has withdrawn from the upcoming Pakistan Super League season 11, just days after being announced as a direct signing by Peshawar Zalmi.
The wicketkeeper-batter confirmed his decision through a video message shared on Instagram, citing post–T20 World Cup scheduling commitments and personal responsibilities in Afghanistan as the reasons for his unavailability.
Speaking in Pashto, Gurbaz said he would not be able to take part in this season of the PSL due to workload management following the World Cup. He added that he plans to focus on his foundation work at home. “After the World Cup, I won’t be available for the PSL this season due to my schedule,” he said, thanking fans for their continued support.
Peshawar Zalmi, the 2017 PSL champions, had announced Gurbaz’s signing on February 5 through a social media post featuring the Afghan batter in traditional attire. The franchise did not disclose financial details of the deal.
However, the 22-year-old’s withdrawal means he will not feature in PSL 11, which is scheduled to begin later this month.
Gurbaz’s international and league career
Since making his international debut in 2019, Gurbaz has emerged as a key player for Afghanistan, representing his side in Tests, One-Day Internationals, and T20 Internationals. Known for his aggressive approach at the top of the order, he has become a regular presence in global franchise cricket.
Gurbaz has previously played in major leagues including the Indian Premier League, Bangladesh Premier League, Caribbean Premier League, SA20, and ILT20.
In the PSL, he featured across three seasons, playing for Multan Sultans in 2021 and Islamabad United in 2022 and 2023. Across 15 matches, he scored 318 runs at an average of 22.71, including one half-century.
With Gurbaz unavailable, Peshawar Zalmi are now expected to make a late squad adjustment as franchises finalise their line-ups under the league’s new auction-based system ahead of the season.
