Russian President Vladimir Putin has accused the West of forcing Russia into a corner, pushing it over a “red line” and forcing it to respond.
Speaking at a meeting of defense officials on Monday, Putin said Russia had no choice but to take action against what it saw as a threat from the West.
Putin’s comments came amid growing concern over the United States’ development and deployment of short- and medium-range missiles.
The Russian president expressed his displeasure at this incident and pointed out that Russia is monitoring the situation.
Russia has warned that if the US benefits from deploying such missiles, it will respond by lifting all voluntary restrictions on its missile equipment.
The Russian president stressed that the country’s nuclear arsenal is only for deterrence and is of strategic importance in maintaining the balance.
Putin also pointed to the continued progress of Russian forces in Ukraine, claiming that 189 villages have been brought under Russian control this year.
More broadly, Putin’s comments reflect growing tensions between Russia and the West, particularly regarding NATO support for Ukraine and increased military cooperation between Western powers.
The rhetoric is a response to changing security dynamics in Europe, where Moscow sees itself increasingly surrounded by Western military allies.
Putin’s warning comes at a time when Russia is strengthening cooperation with the BRICS nations, and the Kremlin is pushing for an artificial intelligence (AI) alliance within the bloc.
